The Western Downs Regional Artists' Exhibition is an annual exhibition proudly presented by Western Downs Regional Council, supported by the Western Downs Galleries Committee represented by Lapunyah Art Gallery, Gallery 107 @ Dalby, Dogwood Crossing, Miles.

With the theme of ‘Essence’ the 2023 exhibition is a contemplation on what’s beyond the surface of a subject. It is an invitation to pause and engage deeply with what is right in front of us.

In 2023, the exhibition offers a total prize pool of $3800, with four Category Prizes, Young Artist Merit Award, and People’s Choice Award. The exhibition will feature on Western Downs Arts as a Gallery and 3D virtual exhibition, and on show from 16 September – 10 November 2023 at Gallery 107 @ Dalby.

Essence

Essence is the basic, intrinsic nature of something – whether a person, a place, an object, or idea. It is the fundamental characteristic which gives something its individual identity. Essence also describes an extract concentrated from a plant or other matter that enhances our experience of the world through flavour and scent. It deepens our sensory perception beyond the visual.

These layers of meaning, combined with the artwork size limitations, are a provocation to artists to subject their creative practice to a distillation process.  Essence asks artists to look beyond the façade and enquire into the core of their subject to discern its most significant element or defining quality. Their challenge is to capture and communicate this essence through their visual medium of choice.

Exhibition Curator

Meet this year’s exhibition Curator Cara-Ann Simpson. The curator selects the exhibition from the entries submitted, awards the prizes, writes the curatorial essay and attends opening night. In the video message below Cara-Ann talks about the exhibition theme Essence.
