The Western Downs Regional Artists' Exhibition is an annual exhibition proudly presented by Western Downs Regional Council, supported by the Western Downs Galleries Committee represented by Lapunyah Art Gallery, Gallery 107 @ Dalby, Dogwood Crossing, Miles.
With the theme of ‘Disrupt’ the 2025 exhibition is a provocation to question the status quo and imagine alternative possibilities.
In 2025, the exhibition offers a total prize pool of $3800, with four Category Prizes, Young Artist Merit Award, and People’s Choice Award. The exhibition will feature on Western Downs Arts as a Gallery and 3D virtual exhibition, and on show from 20 September – 1 November 2025 at Dogwood Crossing, Miles.
Disrupt
Disrupt. Is a provocation. Disrupt. Is a call to action. Disrupt. Is an antidote to the status quo.
To disrupt is to alter the continuing path, pattern or situation; an act, thought or occurrence, intentional or otherwise, that stops something from continuing as per ‘normal’. With contemporary life a complex interplay of physical, technological, societal, political, historical and cultural factors (individual and community), there are many points at which disruptions can occur. Many points where questions can be asked.
Art and artists have played, and continue to play, various roles in society: pushing the boundaries of artistic conventions and traditions, reminding us of beauty and wonder, holding a mirror to ourselves and society, provoking emotions, deeply questioning and responding to systems, structures and social norms and who they exclude, celebrate, amplify and silence.
This year’s theme calls for artists to consider, through their medium of choice, what disrupt means to them, in their life and in their arts practice. Who are the innovators, the change makers, the visionaries, and the tradition breakers? What are the cycles that have been broken, walls that have been knocked down, technological advancements and failures, the transformations of life and nature? How can this be expressed visually? What would you like to see disrupted? Where can you imagine different possibilities?
Imagination disrupts.
Be brave.
Disrupt.
