From early morning onwards these local seniors sit on a chair daily that they call ‘the seat of knowledge outside the newsagency. I watched them debate, argue, laugh and comfort one another. I had always wanted to stop and listen to their stories, and I often regret not doing so. Inside I felt quietly protective of them and unfortunately today they are no more.

Curator’s Comment
Connection is a particularly strong work, as it is powerful in its subtlety. Your understanding of perspective is well-developed and demonstrated, and the shadow work across the ground demonstrates a high level of technical skill.

Seat of Knowledge shows a sensitive composition and strong connections to rural narratives.

The figurative works are authentic and poignant; however, the landscape works demonstrate a higher level of technical resolve.

The visual storytelling approach employed throughout all works is insightful. It would be great to hear more about your story and the works you create via your artwork statements. To further develop these statements, you could seek to address the following four points: The medium/technique/approach employed, a discussion of the subject matter, how this connects to you as the artist, and how your creative process and/or ideas responds to the exhibition theme.

About the artist

Machelle Flanigan started watercolour painting in August 2023, with no history of art. Flanigan loves the flow of the paint. It can go wherever and that is no accident; in art there are no accidents. Flanigan feels she is learning with each new painting that she creates.
