Family and rural succession is a long-term conversation and sometimes a controversy in rural Australia. This portrait of my daughter and I is both an opportunity for reflection and a conversation starter about my personal rural reality. Bailey and I share an address and so much more. Together we work, plan, bicker, cry, laugh, gossip, empathise, paint, create. It is a story of privilege, gratitude and love.

Curator’s Comment
This work conveys an authentic visual expression of lived experience. The use of the semi-transparent white employed as a kind of veil in the background is visually interesting. The artwork statement supports this and articulates the nuances of rural experiences and relationships held within. To further refine your approach in future works, you could focus on the sense of light and dark in the subjects’ faces, further distinguishing them from the overarching visual field as the prominent feature of the work.
