2nd Place: Painting
We travel because we are eager for the culture of new locations. The marketplace is where we will find the fundamentals of place. The food, the handcrafts, life’s necessities, and of course the people interacting and relating. The individual essence and inherent nature of a place and its people.
Great interpretation of theme. Vibrant and detailed, yet still pared back – can almost smell the market and feel the sun! Reminds me of Mary Hammond’s market scenes.
About the artist
Grimes is an artist living in the Hannaford district on the Western Downs. She is inspired by the stories of favourite people and places including the life and landscapes of her own backyard. This year’s theme of Essence has challenged Grimes to consider her own approach and reflect on the fundamentals and defining qualities of her art.
