Although in the year 2022 we are enjoying a magic season on the Western Downs, during many of the years in our recent past we have learnt to survive debilitating droughts. Living close to nature we become familiar with adjusting to the evolving seasons. In Beyond red I wanted to suggest that the vagaries of nature are similar to the turning of the kaleidoscope as it changes colours.
Curator's Comment
This work exudes a story of survival and reinvention. Comparing the ‘variations of nature’ with the changing colours of a kaleidoscope, the artist has captured the vibrant colours of rebirth after drought and the abundance that nature produces after rain. Rich colours are beautifully painted and set bouncing from the canvas by bold linework.
About the artist
Hinz is a mixed media artist based in Drillham on the Western Downs. Living close to nature she gains inspiration from her immediate surrounds. Predominantly working with water-based mediums she experiments with the interactions of layers of inks, watercolours, acrylics, charcoal, and pastels.
